Strawberries are delicious, healthy, beautiful, AND easy to grow if you know what you’re doing. Avoid Overcrowding
Strawberries may be small but that doesn’t mean that you can over crowd your fabric pots. Like most plants, strawberries enjoy their space and need plenty of room to grow. Resist the temptation of planting more than 3 to 4 plants per square foot of soil. If you add too many plants the pot will struggle for water, and even if your plants look lush they will produce fewer strawberries.
Cut Off The Runners
Runners are smaller plants that stem off horizontally. They are commonly seen growing strawberry plants and are great if you have a larger garden, however, horrible if you have a container or pot. Though some growers love the look of the lush greenery when they cascade from the hanging basket or pot, the extra vines will drain water from the plants. This will result in fewer strawberries.
Water More With Less Water
When planting in fabric pots, you have to be wary of the soil drying out. However, you do not want to keep the soil soggy. Avoiding both dryness and sogginess is the key to growing the perfect strawberries. To keep the soil moist, but not soggy, water more frequently with less water.
Use Insulation When Growing Strawberries
Strawberries love heat! Winter and other cold months can do damage to your plants. Beware of temperatures below the twenties. Temperatures in their teen will surely kill your plants. Since your strawberry plants are thin, it is easy for them to freeze all the way through. Insulate your plants during colder months or bring them inside.
Keep The Lifestyle Of Your Plants In Mind
Expect a ton of growth after you harvest your strawberries. As stated earlier in this article, strawberries expand through runners. In addition to runners, strawberries may begin budding tiny fruit in the fall. Full flowers make lush strawberries, so pay close attention to fresh buds. Add fertilizer every August to fully energize and replenish your plants each year.
