FINALLY! Los Angeles is reopening for Halloween events in 2021! Whether you live in California or you’re just visiting for the holiday, there is always something to do! Though, for the most part, every business has the right to run their operation the way they see fit, more companies are opening their doors to those that have been cleared of any illness. Some of these attractions include: 

Universal Studios Halloween  

Universal Halloween Horror Nights is open for Halloween 2021! Every year the infamous Universal Studios opens up their exciting world of fantasy and horror to the public. From September 9th to October 31st this California landmark has transformed into a myriad of horrifying mazes as well as terrifying displayed based on popular movies and shows which as The Walking Dead and Stranger Things. 

 Griffith Park Haunted Hayride 

Halloween isn’t Halloween without a haunted hayride! One of Southern California's biggest Halloween attractions has returned! Held in Griffith Park the haunted hayride remains one of California's scariest ride. Enjoy sideshows in the house of mirrors, free psychic readings, and a place to purchase haunted souvenirs.  

Six Flags Magic Mountains Fright Fest 

Six Flags only gets better for the holidays! Halloween, in particular, is a spectacular horror event with haunted themes and mysterious adventures! Fright Fest is filled with several mazes and scare zones throughout the park! Get there and get scared! 

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride (San Dimas, CA)

Dates: September 25-November 1

The LA Haunted Hayride is returning for 2020 with an all-new, innovative “Drive-Up Experience.” 

Due to this unfortunate worldwide emergency, many Halloween attractions are either going virtual or becoming a drive-through experience. Now, the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride has become a drive-up interactive experience. Drive-in to a creepy stretch of road featuring some of the sets and scenic environments you’ve come to love at the hayride, followed by a haunted show featuring an original multimedia story displayed on a 40 foot screen, as well as horrifying sets and live characters from Midnight Falls!

The Day of the Dead 

Similar to Halloween, the Day of the Dead starts on October 31st but lasts throughout November 2. The Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates deceased loved ones. Customs include prayer, remembrance of friends and family members who have died, wearing skull masks and makeup, and enjoying festivities. This beautiful skull design is a great way to give a remember the dead, without looking too creepy. 

Scary Clown 

Clowns have always been a legitimate fear for a lot of people for many years. This can be due to the popularity of evil clowns in pop culture such as Pennywise in Stephen King’s movies. Psychologists have explored the irrational fear of clowns and linked it to the clown’s makeup. When someone has that much of their face covered, it is difficult to tell who they are or how they feel. With a fake smile or frown painted on, it is difficult to gage someone’s emotions which makes it harder to trust them or predict what they’re gonna do. Evil clown looks can be simple, sexy, or for the scarier look add a little fake blood. 

Glamour Zombie

Just because you’re dead, doesn’t mean you still can’t look your best! Becoming a zombie is a really simple way to get into the Halloween spirit! You don’t need to run to Amazon for pounds of fake rotting flesh, just add a little glitter. The great part about being a zombie, is that you could have died in your best outfit! Feel free to cheat a little bit and consider busting out that old dress you’ve been waiting for an excuse to wear.

What to Cook for Halloween?

Halloween is all about the sugary treats but as adults we all know that can lead to a sour tummy. This year forget about absorbing tons of candy corn and decide on healthier, savory options. There are many deserts and food ideas for Halloween so long as you just be creative! Here are some ideas to help you get started! 

Halloween Deep Fried Snacks. Have you ever tried deep fried candy corn chicken wings or an alien boiled egg? If not you need to explore the world of deep frying with a classic countertop deep fryer. Experiment with different types of foods! We suggest deep fried pizza, ice cream, and cheesecake! Trust us, you won’t be disappointed. 

Surprisingly Delicious Candy Corn Glazed Deep Fried Chicken Wings

We all know and love fried chicken- but have you ever had it with a candy corn glaze? Halloween is the perfect time to try something new and a little strange! However, you can’t really ever go wrong with wings? Try this spicy and sweet recipe below!  

Ingredients

Vegetable or peanut oil, for frying

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon paprika

3 pounds chicken wings, split at the joints, tips removed

1 1/2 cups Frank's RedHot sauce (or 3/4 cup other hot sauce)

1 stick unsalted butter

2 tablespoons honey

¼ cup water 

Instructions

1. Heat your cooking oil to about 375 degrees
2. Place the flour and paprika in a small bowl and coat the thawed out chicken wings
3. Put chicken wings in the deep fryer for about 10-15 minutes
4. Drain on a paper towel 
5. Mix the hot sauce with the butter and the honey and melt in a boiler or saucepan
6. Melt candy corn in a double boiler or saucepan 
7. Combine candy corn with mixture 
8. Coat wings in sauce
9. Sprinkle candy corn on top for decoration 

Ever Have an Alien Egg? 

That’s right, aliens have eggs too, and they have a light crunch! Deep fried soft boiled eggs are not only an interesting choice party but tasty snack you can have at any point. This treat is is not hard to make, and the rewards are outstanding.

Ingredients 

• 9 large eggs, room temperature
• 1/4 cup buttermilk
• 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce
• 1/2 cup all purpose flour
• 1/2 cup semolina flour (pasta flour)***
• 1 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
• 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
• Peanut oil or rice bran oil (for frying)
• Dandelion greens (for garnish)
• Sriracha Sauce 

Instructions:

1. Soft boil 6 large eggs for about 6 minutes then gently crack and peel when ready 
2. Combine the 3 remaining eggs with the buttermilk and a little srirach in a bowl
3. In a separate bowl add bowl flours together
4. In a third bowl add the panko bread crumbs 
5. Roll the boiled in in the flour mixture, egg mixture, and finally panko mixture 
6. Heat oil to about 375 degrees 
7. Place the eggs in the oil basket no longer than 2 minutes 
8. Drain on a paper towel 
9. Retrieve eggs and serve with dandelion greens

Deep Fried Candy Corn Morsels 

Oh yes, candy corn can be deep-fried as well! Deep frying candy corn is easy, fun, and only takes a few minutes to make!    

Ingredients: 

2 cups all-purpose baking mix 

1 large egg

1/2 to 3/4 cups buttermilk

3/4 cup candy corn, coarsely chopped

1/2 cup cornflakes cereal

Vegetable oil

Powdered sugar

Instructions:

1. Combine baking mix with the egg and butter miilk 
2. Mix in candy corn and cornflakes 
3. Heat oil to 350 degrees 
4. Cook about 6 spoonful's of the dough into for about a minute each 
5. Drain on a paper towel 

Hidden eye Mozzarella Balls

Mozzarella balls are tempting especially when they have a monster’s eye in them! Hide an olive in the center of your mozzarella ball for a sneaky surprise. Check out this spicy recipe and try and new way to eat mozzarella. 

Ingredients

1 8- ounce package cream cheese at room temperature

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

3-4 Hot Sauce

10-15 small black olives

¼ teaspoon kosher salt

½ cup flour

2 eggs

1 cup panko bread crumbs

Frying oil

Instructions

1. In a large bowl combine the cream cheese and the mozzarella
2. Scoop with ice cream scooper 
3. Stick the olive into the center of the cheese ball and using a spoon, fill the hole with hot sauce
4. Mold into a ball and drizzle with hot sauce 
5. Heat cooking oil to 350 degrees 
6. Place beaten eggs, flour, and panko bread crumbs in 3 separate bowls
7. Place the cheese ball in the flour, then the egg, then the panko bread crumbs
8. Cook the cheese balls for about 2 minutes in heated frying oil 
9. Drain on paper towel and serve with blood marinara sauce 

Ghostly Fried Chicken 

There are many ways to fry chicken! Thinly slices breaded chicken breast can be shaped into any creepy crawler you can think of! Get creative with your cuts, or use a Gingerbread man slicer to help you form your ghost shapes. 

Ingredients 

• 8 pieces thinly sliced chicken breast 
• 2 tablespoons kosher salt, divided
• 3 tablespoons smoked paprika
• 2 tablespoons ground white pepper
• 1 tablespoon garlic powder
• 1 tablespoon ground ginger
• 1 tablespoon celery salt
• 1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1 tablespoon ground mustard
• 2 teaspoons dried thyme
• 2 teaspoons dried basil
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 tablespoons cornstarch
• 1 cup buttermilk
• 2 large egg whites
• 2 quarts peanut or vegetable oil, for deep frying

Instructions: 

1. Using a GingerBread Man Cutter or knife shape fully thawed chicken breasts into ghost shape. 
2. Mix paprika, white pepper, garlic powder, ginger, celery salt, black pepper, mustard, thyme, basil, and oregan together in a bowl 
3. Heat cooking oil to 340 degrees
4. Completely coat the chicken breast in seasoning 
5. Put the flour and corn starch, egg and buttermilk and two separate bowls. Add the bread crumbs in a third bowl 
6. Coat chicken in flour mix, then egg mixture, then bread crumb mixture 
7. Deep fry chicken breast until golden brown and fully cooked 

Halloween Adult Drinks. Halloween is the time to celebrate, and remember the fun doesn’t stop when you’re an adult! There are a myriad of adult beverages you can enjoy, especially if you have an ice machine! Think about making icy candy corn drinks or vampire red strawberry based daiquiris? We have the solution for you. 

Candy Corn Fantasy 

Ingredients

3 dashes of orange bitters

1 orange slice

.5 oz Monin Candy Corn Syrup

6 ounces of Cake Vodka 

Directions 

Crush bitters, orange, and syrup in an old fashion glass. Combine shaved ice on to of the mixture and garnish with 4-5 of cotton candy. 

Vampire’s Dream 

Ingredients 

 3/4 cup of white rum

1 oz lemon juice

1 oz simple syrup

2 strawberries, muddled

Directions

Muddle the strawberries first, then add lemon juice, and the simple syrup. Combine all the ingredients together with shaved ice, pour in a tall glass, and garnish with a strawberry.

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces ​vodka

1/2 ounce​ black raspberry liqueur

2​ ounces cranberry juice (more or less)

Optional: fresh mint garnish

Directions

Mix all ingredients together in a shaker with shaved ice. Strain into a tall glass and enjoy with your Halloween buddy. 

Ectoplasm 

Ingredients

1 Jigger apple brandy or 

1 tsp grenadine

2 jiggers Blackberry Shimmery Liqueur 

Directions

Add a scoop of shaved ice and shake for a few seconds. Drain into a glass and top with more blackberry liqueur. Pour in 1 tsp of grenadine syrup. Finish with a crushed ice topping. 

Black Heart 

Ingredients

 2 oz Dark Rum 

Coca-Cola

Cherry

orange wedge, optional

Directions

Add shaved ice to a large collins glass. Stir in cherry. Fill the glass with soda to the top. 

Ghostly Encounter

Ingredients

8 mint leaves, plus extra for garnish

1-ounce lemon juice

2 teaspoons brown sugar

2 ounces of tequila juice 

Directions

Mix the mint, lemon juice, and brown sugar in a cocktail shaker. Place in glass and top with shaved ice. Give the cocktail a good strong shake. Garnish with mint.
